Overwhelmed Professionals and Stress

by Jill Harmon, LCSW-R, CCTP-II

Overwhelmed professionals often appear successful on the outside, but internally feel stretched thin, exhausted, and unable to shut their minds off. April is Stress Awareness Month, and now is a perfect time to recognize this pattern—and do something about it.

What Overwhelm Looks Like

Professional overwhelm doesn’t always look dramatic. It often shows up as:

•  Constant mental noise, even outside of work
•  Trouble relaxing or “turning off”
•  Irritability at home
•  Feeling behind no matter how much gets done
•  Difficulty sleeping or fully resting
•  Many high-achieving individuals push through these symptoms for years, assuming it’s just part of the job.

Why It Gets Worse Over Time

Stress builds over time. When it isn’t addressed, it doesn’t just disappear—it accumulates.

This can lead to:

•  Burnout
• Anxiety
• Emotional exhaustion
• Physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue
• At a certain point, the usual coping strategies—pushing harder, staying busy, ignoring it—stop working.

Why “Just Relax” Doesn’t Work

Telling an overwhelmed professional to relax is like telling a car with no brakes to slow down.

The issue isn’t effort. It’s that your mind and body have been operating in overdrive for too long.

When stress becomes chronic, it affects your ability to:

•  Focus
•  Sleep
•  Be present
•  Feel a sense of calm
•  This is where therapy can be helpful.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a space to step out of the constant pressure and begin understanding what’s driving your stress.

In therapy, you can:

•  Identify patterns that keep you stuck in overwhelm
•  Learn practical strategies to manage stress more effectively
•  Improve emotional awareness and regulation
•  Develop healthier boundaries with work and responsibilities
•  This process helps you move from constant reactivity to a greater sense of control.

A Different Way Forward

You don’t have to wait until burnout takes over and forces shutdown.

Working with overwhelmed professionals often focuses on:

•  Creating realistic expectations
•  Building sustainable routines
•  Learning how to slow down without guilt
•  The goal is not to eliminate ambition or success—but to make your life feel manageable again.
